A couple times a year, my ma meets up with the parents of my childhood friends and they drink decaf coffee and eat tea biscuits or whatever and brag about their childrens’ accomplishments in adulthood. Having been raised in a small town in a very religious/churchy environment, it is of no surprise that most news involves traditional milestones such as engagements, weddings, births, homeownership, etc…Now, allow me to make it clear that I do not view those things condescendingly, I’m genuinely happy for all of them and sometimes even envy that type of security, however since I took a more schismatic route, my poor ma is bereft of traditional offspring showboatin’ opportunities. One might assume that she could harvest material from my fairly extensive accomplishments in comics industry or the fact (and I say this with a disgusting amount of pride) that I am a completely self sufficient, grown ass woman in my 30′s with my own apartment in NYC. However, my ma let those facts lay dormant last February during the lastest update of my old pals’ current lives. When I asked my ma what she said about me, she replied, “oh, I don’t like to brag, so not much; I tell them you’re a late bloomer. Although I did tell them all about your asshole ex-boyfriend and the terrible things he did!” GEE THANKS, MA.

So, Ma, you reading this? I hope so because that unfortunate story was leading up to my announcement that my last book, The Infinite Wait & Other Stories, was nominated for an Eisner Award this year, under “best reality based work.” Since the book I did before that, Drinking at the Movies, was nominated and lost in 2011 under the “best humor publication,” I was hoping to play the pity vote on this one since The Infinite Wait involves such Serious Matters as chronic illness, alcoholism and a lot of other bummers, but I realized it’s a dubious hope when I saw the other books I’m up against. But that’s not going to stop me from shamelessly asking you, ‘comic book industry professionals,’ to vote for my book if you’re so inclined. Give my ma something to brag about! And if I win, I get to put a STICKER on my book, badadadum!

Voting is open until June 12th. If you’re wondering if you’re a ‘comic book industry professional,’ you might be if you are any one or more of the following, as listed on the site: Artist, colorist, editor, letterer, publisher, retailer, writer, other. That’s pretty broad, seems to me like if you ever went to a comics convention and farted and someone noticed, you can probably vote. So hop on it!

But in all earnestness, I’m up against some really solid books and even though everyone rolls their eyes right off their face when someone says, “it’s an honor just to be nominated,” I really do mean it. I worked hard on this book, it’s the one I’m the most proud of and it was a great experience working with Annie Koyama, who published the book at Koyama Press. I most likely will not be at the award ceremony since the San Diego ComicCon is its own hot realm of fresh hell but congratulations to everyone nominated and best of luck!

1) I’ve neglected updating this site in awhile since I’ve been working on non-comics related projects and zzzzzzz, but if you want to see a few photos and random sketches, I’ve been posting stuff frequently on Tumblr and Instagram, so check those out and then congratulate me for finally doing stuff on the internet that everyone else has been doing for years.

2) Added a bunch of new stuff to my Etsy store, and books and jewelry and bric-a-brak and junk are still for sale.

3) Here are some photos of a few abandoned places I’ve explored recently. I’ve been talking about doing a blog of this stuff for awhile not but then instead I just keep eating triscuits and play gin rummy online because meh, January.

I finally opened an Etsy Store just in time for the holidays, check it out! I’m selling old comics pendant necklaces, keychains, magnet sets, comic books, art, etc…Everything is handmade and I’ll be adding more stuff over the next two weeks. Plus all book packages for The Infinite Wait are $5 off until Dec. 16th. If you’re on the fence about ordering The Infinite Wait, then check out this incredibly thoughtful and thorough review by Rob Clough on The Comics Journal. He reveals more about my process and myself than even I’m aware of. And he reveals one of my best kept secrets when he states that, “while a lot of things annoy Wertz, there are even more that delight her.” It’s totally true but don’t tell anyone! More info about the Etsy store after these sample images of some of the stuff available:

To get your orders by Christmas, place them by the 16th just to be safe. I’ll continue to ship out orders until the 19th before I temporarily close the store while I’m out of town until Jan 2nd. If you’re new to Etsy, make sure to view the “Shop Sections” list since the first images on the store homepage are random. If you there is a specific vintage comics image that you have in mind, feel free to email me about it since I most likely have an image of it in one of my many old comics collection books and I’d be happy to customize a necklace, keychain or magnets for you!

If there are any mistakes, questions, suggestions, etc…about orders or the store, please feel free to email me at juliajwertz(at)gmail.com. This is fairly new to me so I’m happy to hear any feedback you might have.

Don’t except any fart jokes, I answered these questions like a grown up. Also I’ll be doing slides and reading old diaries for Animal Farm shows at the Legion Bar on December 4th with Julia Fierro, Rebecca Schiff and the Comics Curmudgeon’s Josh Fruhlinger.

Now here’s a scant few photos of places I’ve been in the last few months because I feel bad about not posting anything. Kidding, who gives a shit about the internet? You might have seen some of these on flickr but I assume no one uses flickr except me anymore. These are the more well known places I’ve explored recently, I’m saving the less popular ones for another project. Also, no, I will not tell you how to get to these places, you just have to use the internet like I did.

And last but not least, me and Jen Phippen, with whom I do most of my exploring because she’s up for anything but also stops me from doing dangerous stuff that I want to do SO BAD. That’s the best kind of exploring buddy.

Continued from West Coast trip pt 1...

After puttering around the Bay Area for a week, my older brother and I started our road trip from San Francisco to LA to Arizona. When we were kids, our parents drove us down the coast a number of times but it never gets old. I mean, just look at these colors! JUST LOOK AT THEM!!! it’s so beautiful that it makes me feel insane.

We pulled over to pee in Campbell, the town where Lars Frederiksen of Rancid grew up. We didn’t pick that town on purpose but it reminded me of when, on purpose, we went to 560 State Street from that Jay-Z song and it was a real estate office or something. Woof. Don’t tell anyone that we did that.

Then we made a snack stop at a vegetable farm stand where I did this with a brussel sprout stock and no one was happy about it.

We briefly stopped by Mt. Herman, the Christian family camp we went to every year as kids. We arrived during the 11am prayer circles and it totally gave me the deja vu douchechills. My brother said all his memories of camp involved crushes on girls and all mine were about hiking in the creek, singing songs about Jesus and forming friendships that were going to last FOREVER. Or until the end of camp.

Back along highway 1, we snapped this photo and then got the creeps real bad about how related we look.

Next we hit up Big Sur and saw McWay Falls, the most poorly titled waterfall ever but goddamn if it wasn’t the prettiest.

I spotted this lil’ guy by the sea. He had a lot of feelings.

Josh said if he ever saw a guy making this face, he’d push him into the ocean.

We stopped at the Madonna Inn because we always used to stop there so the boys could pee into the waterfall in the bathroom. The Madonna Inn is by far the most splendidly tacky hotel I’ve ever had the misfortune of laying my eyeballs upon.

I never got to see the bathroom waterfall as a kid because of rules about not going in the men’s bathroom or whatever but now I’m a grown up so I can do whatever the hell I want!

Look at this idiot doin’ stuff on the beach

In San Luis Obispo we only had time to make one stop, so we made the grossest stop possible: Bubblegum Alley.

Barf a million, you guys.

As kids we never stayed in hotels because we had an amazing old motor home, but there was one exception, which was Apple Farm. I used to eat these candy sticks all the time but now they just tasted like a stomachache and dental work. Being a grown up is the worst.

Being that we were in a car this time, we stayed at a hotel where I terrified Josh by doing the puppet dance, a jig that Laura Park accuses me of plotting to do on her grave someday.

oh look, here’s some goddamn fucking sea lions

The next day we stopped at Venice Beach where the first thing we saw was a teenager hit a pigeon with a bat and then break its neck with his bare hands. We were horrified but later agreed that it was kind of awesome in a depraved, Dickensian sort of way.

If I ever see a guy making this face, I’m going to punch it off

We spent too long at the skate park because watching skaters is actually pretty fascinating. The Venice skate park is famous for being the place where kids get scouted, go pro for awhile until they get old or blow out their knee and then they come back to Venice Beach to be a bum.

On the way out of Venice Beach, I saw this horrible, living nightmare and I haven’t been the same ever since.

We spent a few days in LA, which I thought I would hate, having disliked it as a kid, but turns out I really like it. The whole city looks like it hasn’t been touched since the 70’s, save a few Starbucks here and there. It’s really decrepit and bleak, two things I’m pretty fond of for short periods of time.

Here’s the Marilyn Monroe without her wig at the Chinese Theater, the only photo I allowed myself to take of costumed performers because I find them incredibly disconcerting.

We went to the movies and saw End of Watch, which was really good despite its highly improbable and loose plot lines. I’d highly recommend it, especially if you want some good, desolate LA neighborhoods/architecture porn.

At night we found a hole in the fence leading up into the Hollywood Hills so naturally we snuck through it and hiked on up a steep hill, where this view awaited us at the top.

There was a lot of rustling in the bushes behind us, which was making me way more nervous than when I do this kind of trespassing. Then we found this and almost lost our minds.

I’m pretty sure the fright of the night before is what led to this impressive bed head. I kept yelling from the bathroom for my brother to come look at my hair but he wouldn’t so I went into the room and he still wouldn’t look at it because he didn’t care at all, but a few weeks later he texted this: “remember when you had funny hair and I refused to look at it? I keep thinking about that and laughing.” What a dick.

On the way out of LA, we drove through Skid Row, which had recently been somewhat cleaned up but is still a solid few blocks of tent city. This is the shelter area from the documentary. The photo I took was really dark so I lightened it in instagram, prompting my brother to shame me by saying “I can’t believe your instagraming Skid Row. That’s actually a thing you’ re doing. That is what is happening right now.”

The rest of the drive was pretty grim as the highway between LA and Arizona is mostly desert and rest stops.

My brother wouldn’t stop “car dancing” and I was going to text a photo of him to a friend and then I made this joke while pretending to be my friend looking at the text message: “Oh, your brother can’t stop car dancing? Well I can’t stop not giving a shit.” And then I laughed at my own joke and repeated it here on the internet, much to my disgrace.

Our trip ended in Prescott, where my brother lives. Here’s Josh and Charlie outside the ice cream place, which a strategically and unfortunately placed hand. This place sells Thrifty’s ice cream, which I thought was extinct sometime in the 80′s when the Thrifty’s drug stores disappeared but turns out the ice cream is still around and jesus no one cares about this but me but I just care SO MUCH.

And to wrap it up, here’s a photo that looks like a shitty Bret Easton Ellis book jacket:

And here’s where I want to live when I grow up:

so that’s it! Next I’m going to post about the Greystone insane asylum and it’s going to blow your tiny minds.

Before I get into this post about my trip, I want to say that if you ordered a book in the last two weeks, thank you! and they are going out tomorrow. If you emailed me about a missing order or a mistake, please be patient as I try to track them down and respond to emails. If you need to contact me about an order, please email juliajwertz@gmail.com. Pretty please do not facebook message me. If you emailed me recently and I do not respond by Monday, feel free to email me again as I’m sure a few emails got lost in the shuffle. Okay, enough of this, here’s a post totally unrelated to comics or books or shows or any of that racket:

Disclaimer: I’m going to start posting more often about travels and urban exploring adventures I did over the summer since it was the first time I’d taken a break from comics in many years. I normally refrain from posting about trips on account of who fucking cares, but if I’m not making comics about something, I want to document it in another way for future reference. So consider this an extremely abridged and trivial version of a comic.

I usually visit my family during the fall in order to avoid the existential dreads that arise from going home for the holidays, and this year I went in October to accompany my older brother on a road trip down the coast and into Arizona. I prefer red eye flights to cut down on airport kerfuffles and crowds, but when leaving NYC I try to take morning flights just so I can see this:

I grew up in Northern California in the foothills of a valley on the last street on the edge of town in a 120 year old farmhouse that my parents bought for about 20k before living out in the boonies was considered a desirable thing. (now the houses around us go for upwards to a million or more) Here’s the street as it is today…

and the house as it was in the 80′s.It hasn’t changed at all in the last 30 years. I took a lot of interior photos to compare to drawings in The Infinite Wait, but I’m going to save that for another post.

You can’t really see it, but this banner downtown is a warning about the glassywinged sharpshooter, which is a big problem in town. Also a specific moth that’s reeking havoc and, as the second photo billboard shows, bug smuggling. It’s a small town.

On Thursday, my little brother and I drove to San Francisco for my book release party at Needles & Pens, but first we stopped off in the Presidio to do some tomfoolery. Jonathan was much better at it than I on account of his youth, so I’m only posting photos of him.

Then we headed on down to the Sutro Bath ruins, one of my favorite parts of the city.

I crept really close to an egret and snapped this photo and blew my own mind:

This is what the Sutro Baths looked like in 1896:

and here’s what it looks like today. (Note the same rock out in the ocean on the first photo)

Below the cave you’re allowed to go in is a little passage to the other side of the mountain. You have to trespass at low tide to get in and it’s full of barnacles and sea anemones, so if you do it, tread lightly. Also be warned that you’ll get a filth on your hands that you can’t wash off no matter how hard you scrub, so don’t touch the walls unless that’s something you want to marvel at for days like I did.

The book party at Needles & Pens was packed, thanks so much to everyone who came out for it! Sorry we ran out of books so fast. You can order one from me or Secret Acres if you want, or go back to Needles & Pens later when they have more. Here’s the audience and me reading with Marinaomi and Tessa Brunton.

On the way home, we picked up the older Wertz brother from the Oakland airport. I wrote it that way because later on the trip we saw this sign and it was weird:

speaking of brothers, here’s some obnoxious photos of the three of us goofin’ around, either to my mom’s delight or horror, not sure which.

My older brother and I took a walk down the street to find our old creek fort behind the berry bushes, which was now grown in, save a few remnants of the rope swing and some boards from the two story tree fort.

Back in the day, we’d bent/tied the branches to build a tunnel to a little fort inside the berry bushes, creating a leafy, thorny passage way accessible only by small children, where the Playboys and cigarettes were stashed.

Here’s the tar tunnel under the street we played in…

and the old bridge in our backyard that has long since falled into the creek.

My brother took this photo and captioned it: “I caught it and tried to sell it to an exotic pet shop but they said there wasn’t much demand for these because of all the snacks you have to constantly feed them.”

It turned out that our stroll down memory lane resulted in me getting stung by a hornet and Josh stepping in poo. But to my brother’s credit, when the hornet was inside his shirt, he chose to alert me by song instead of screams, so that was delightful.

The next day we met up with our old man at the diner we used to go to every Sunday before church as kids. These days, he’s really into “eating diatomaceous earth, food grade, not swimming pool grade,” which is a pretty interesting and horrifying way to get rid of bugs. It’s worth looking into if that’s your concern. Seems like they should use that to get rid of the glassywinged sharpshooter.

The diner hasn’t changed much, except for the removal of the booths and a paint job. This the counter where I would go sit and pester Ned, the short order cook who would sneak me hot chocolate and donuts.

We tried to get dad to take photos of us on my iphone, which led to a series of “laughing at dad being old” photos, a joke he’s totally in on.

My dad lives here in Arizona but he was in town fixing up an old boat out in the marina.

Despite being around two of the most foodie capitals in the world, we kept eating at the taco truck by the junkyard because it was fucking delicious. My brother and I share the same sentiment about food while traveling, which is that neither of us care and it takes up too much adventure time to sit down to a long meal. We street trucked our way through Paris last year too.

Then we sat around making some serious faces because Josh just got instagram.

Here’s some shit for ya: this is the church I went to for 15 years, where my dad was a reverend when I was little. So, yeah, religion was a thing we were all into for quite some time. Weird, I know.

This is window of my childhood bedroom and the sealed up door I was obsessed with on account of knowing it was magic.

Aaaaaaand here’s us playing scrabble on various nights. My ma was surprisingly horrible at it and Josh was upset that two of his tiles were grapes and he couldn’t play the word “fonky” despite saying it repeatedly. There was 100% more yelling and laughing than should ever occur during such a mild mannered game.

And that’s it for now. Up next- the road trip from San Francisco down to LA and across to Arizona.

1) Thanks so much to those who ordered books from me this week! To those who didn’t, you still can. (DISCLAIMER: THERE’S A PAUSE ON ORDERS FOR A FEW DAYS)

2) Do you like to like things on facebook? yeah me neither but if you’re so inclined, you should do it for The Infinite Wait page because I’m told that kind of stuff is good PR. And if you’re an interviewer, a blog, a podcast, etc…now is a good time to hit me up because I gotta peddle my wares while they’re hot. I can be reached at juliajwertz(at)gmail(dot)com

3) to those who pre-ordered: I was hoping to get those books out earlier but it turned out I had to wait until the official release, which was tuesday, so they’ll be going out this week or monday at the latest. I would have had them out by wednesday but holy fucking hell I had no idea how long it would take to burn CDs, sign books, make prings hand make all those magnets and keychains. They weren’t something I ordered pre-made, I actually bought all the seprate supplies and cut and glued and hooked, etc…see below for a small sample of what the rest of my studio is covered in:

Plus I’m working with RareEarth Magnets which are a very strong magnet backing so they don’t fall off the fridge like the cheap ones and if you’ve ever used those magnets, you know what happens when one gets too close to the other and suddenly your flat, aligned mass of magnets is suddenly one huge clump. There was a lot of yelling in my apartment this week. And then I ran out of supplies and oh man no one cares about this at all I’m so sorry.

What I’m trying to say is that everyone will get their books early next week! Pre-orders and deluxe packages orders will get something that looks like this, with some variation. (all the buttons are different and have a variety of old comic book characters and some of the keychains are larger)

If you’re still reading this and you live in NYC, you should come to this tomorrow night!

This is part of the Brooklyn Book Festival, for which the Brooklyn Paper profiled me , leading to the delightful photo caption “Julia Wertz remembers liking small spaces.”

That book I’ve been rambling on about for forever is finally available! The Infinite Wait & Other Stories, published by Koyama Press, is a 228 page collection of 3 short stories about all the jobs I’ve had since age 6, being diagnosed with systemic lupus when I was 20 and the role libraries have played in my life from childhood to present day. We will not be putting the book on Amazon for quite some time, if at all, so I’ll provide you with a few choices for ordering. First, you can order it from me (see below) which is the most appreciated way since such orders are my only income right now. Packages range from $25-$50. Or, since I know purse strings are tight, you can order it from Secret Acres at the sticker price. After your purchasing options, please scroll down for more info about the book and for a lil’ story about how it came to be.

-There are also more purchasing options in the store, if you’d like to also buy Drinking at the Movies or the Fart Party vol 1, as well as choices for various bundle packages-

Koyama Press has a peak inside of the book and short description, which I’ll poach for this site as well. I also have a number of sample pages posted on this site that you can view here .

“The Infinite Wait and Other Stories is latest book from Julia Wertz, the critically acclaimed author of The Fart Party Vols. 1 and 2 (Atomic Books, 2007 and 2009) and Drinking at the Movies (Random House, 2010). In contrast to her last book, which was a full-length graphic memoir, The Infinite Wait is not a sustained narrative, but rather a collection of three short stories or graphic novellas. The stories in this collection contain Wertz’s signature acerbic wit, ribald humour and keen eye for the everyday, but they also find the cartoonist delving into the personal. “Industry” catalogues 25 years of alternately terrible and terrific jobs, from selling golf balls, feeding and failing to feed animals, waitressing, and finally to cartooning and the publication of her first book. “A Strange and Curious Place” is a love letter to Wertz’s hometown library; its mysteries and revelations, and its ability foster growth, rebellion and even artistic affirmation. The most sustained narrative in the collection, the eponymous “The Infinite Wait,” chronicles Wertz’s move from her small hometown to San Francisco, her diagnosis with an incurable, auto-immune disease and her subsequent discovery of comics and comic making. The collection’s title, The Infinite Wait and Other Stories, intentionally and ironically recalls the vacuous and pretentious book titles of the literary elite, but these stories are the polar opposite of pretension. They are comics born out of illness, but not defined by it, and they are filled with the sometimes messy, heartbreaking and hilarious moments that make up a life.” A bit of a back story: The main story in this book is about being diagnosed with systemic lupus in 2003, a story that I originally started almost 10 years ago and then put on the back burner while I went and made a buncha trouble in real life. When I was done with that racket, I revisited the story and decided to flesh it out and do a book. By that time, I was working with a big publisher and I approached them and others with the idea, and was promptly told it was not mass marketable and that I should try doing something else more appealing. I don’t think that satisfying creativity is made in the confines of “mass marketability” unless that’s already an avenue the creator has pursued or easily falls into and I had no interest in working like that, so I took my book idea to Annie Koyama of Koyama Press and she enthusiastically agreed to publish it. I’m grateful for my time with a big publisher but I’m incredibly happy to be back with “my people” who’s work and passion (what a gross word, sorry) lay in comics, whether they’re a hit or not.And so, kind reader, I’m appealing to you now to buy this book either from me or from Secret Acres and prove those industry folks wrong. The publication of this book was done in the regular comics way (read, no money involved) until the book goes on sale. Although it’s not a lucrative way to make money on a project, it is satisfying to know I’m seeing money from what I sell, not from what people it suits think I might sell. There’s been a lot of talk about how comics were briefly swept up into big publishing and are now going back to their roots with small/boutique presses, and I’m happy to say I’m one of them. Many thanks to Annie Koyama for making it possible. That was a lot of text, lets show some pictures now! Here’s the back of the book and some things people said about it:

Here’s the full cover (french flaps out) designed by the formidable Matthew Forsythe, and Annie picked a lovely woven texture paper with french flaps. You know, if you’re into nerd stuff like that.

Note: there is a printing error in this book- page 94 is a double. Here is the missing page 93. Please see the events page for all upcoming book release parties, readings and comic conventions.
