my first job

January 17, 2012

This is the first page from a 50 or so page story about some of the jobs I’ve had from age 4 to now. I got the idea to do this story after I recorded the Paying Dues podcast last year. There is some speculation in my memory about the price of the golf balls, but I very clearly remember my mom’s description of marriage and I still pretty much feel the same way about it.

Awwww… that’s so sweet! When I was little, my brother and I fought like Republican presidential primary candidates (that is to say relentlessly, with devious and underhanded tactics) and he was about my least favorite person on the planet. Things have improved since then, fortunately, but I have always yearned to have a sibling who was also a close friend.
I hope that is still the case for you and your brother. And that you don’t live under your parents’ porch.

Once when we were little, my sister and I set up a stand on the street where we sold plastic baggies of dirt. That lasted a day. Amazingly, we actually made one sale.

My bro and I were close, although his mind was always light years ahead in terms of finance. Once when we were still little tadpoles, we both hit the front yard for customers, with him selling lemonade at a stand for 5 cents a pop, while I sold watercolor paintings for 1 cent a pop.
He made several bucks since all he had to do was keep pouring under the shade of a tree, while I labored all day in the sun just to sell a few cents worth of blurry “modern art” masterpieces. So even back then, I could tell I was well on my way to being one of the most terrible businessmen of all time.

we just sold a lot of koolaid to spend at a dollar general. What did your mom do with the golf balls? Did she play golf?

When I was an awkward teenager, my 5 year old cousin asked (in front of people) if we would be married when we were grown-ups. I was utterly embarrassed at the time and didn’t know how to respond. But now I hope maybe it’s not that odd.
