foiled plans

October 10, 2011

While I was visiting home these last few weeks, a few people asked me whatever became of the idea for a TV show based on my books that I talked about in Drinking at the Movies. The short answer is I never wrote the script they asked for, but the long answer is that the proceeding years were too messy for me to get my shit together and pursue our ideas for the show. I’ve come to see that as a good thing since my motivations and lifestyle have changed a lot since 2008, but the full explanation is too tedious so I’ll just leave you with this page (occurring in 2009) from the book I’m working on.

You’ll regret not following through. You can write it and still make it something that you want.

a show about your life would be a refreshing break from the usual bland fare we’re treated to now’a'days.

Terrible choice.

Speaking as someone who knows what it’s like to do work that I hate just for a good paycheck, I say you made the right decision. There’s also the inevitable invasion of your private life (exponentially more than being a well-known indie comics author) to contend with. Good call.

I probably would have went ahead and did it, and slowly crept in my other ideas. Gotta be creepy in this biz…wait….

Don’t listen to these jagoffs. You’re very good at what you do. Trust your instincts.

Personally, I think you made the right choice in not taking that job. I think it’s good for people to put job choices into two boxes: 1) jobs I can do + feel good about myself + 2) jobs that I can’t stand + I feel completely crappy about me, while I do these jobs.

For example, I once thought of joining the U.S. military. I’m glad that I tossed that idea in the trash, in a hurry! I like it that the military people keep themselves in order, but me + the military are glad that I didn’t try and do a military career. I’m not suited for it. I absolutely hate: exercising/physical training, getting my face yelled in when I mess up + I really hate some guy holding me under his thumb ( when I sing to myself, without permission, when I’m in uniform).
The military is the greatest thing, for some people. But, because I don’t like some stuff that [the army does, and I can't do], They’d chase me out of the military in a hurry. And rightly so. And me + the military are happy with that arrangement.

Panel three says it all. You’d be their bitch soon enough. Of course, you’d probably be well paid, so… Yeah. I believe the ends sometimes justify the means, but only if you’re spiritually advanced. (kind of joking, hee.}
Your comic would be more suitable for an indie film.

Wertzie, like many things the best approach is a half-ass one. Don’t let them take over your stuff and make it total crap, but don’t take the entire burden of the work on your own shoulders, either. The key that many other successful souls have discovered is that you first need to engage a like-minded confederate already working inside the belly of the beast. This go between can both work with you and the evil showbiz powers that be. If you don’t already know such a divine being (often assuming such titles as associate producer or assistant so-and-so) then just forget the whole damn thing. Because without that magical imp, you’re screwed.

I think you would have done a much, much better job than Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings are doing with the sitcom-ed versions of *their* lives, but that doesn’t mean that you would have enjoyed the process at all. It takes a certain type of person to thrive in the TV industry: if you’re not one of ‘em, it’s just a friggin’ nightmare.

good for you, fuck writing something that means nothing to you

go with your gut, it said “hell no” to the idea but your ego say “ooh think go the money and that means security” but your heart says “I will f-ing kill myself if they make my life into a shitty show”…stick with what makes you happy and it will pay off!!!!
