greenpoint sketches

May 13, 2011

Since I’m supposed to be working on a new book, I’m frittering away my time doing exactly not that. I got it into my dumb head that it’d be a good idea to draw the streets and stores of my neighborhood and then I was imagining how amazing it would be if there was an illustrated street view that you could navigate through just like on Googlemaps. I would never embark on such a lofty endeavor, but I wish someone else would so I’d have more things to do instead of work. In the mean time, here’s these sketches:

Word bookstore on Franklin and Milton:

Small stretch of stores, mostly Polish, along Nassau ave near my apartment. A lot of these stores have pretty cool, old signs that drawing doesn’t do justice to. I tried image searching a photo of Steve’s Meat Market sign but got a picture of a hamburger shoved up someone’s butt so nevermind about that.

also there are still a few posters left for sale!

I love it! It’s my neighborhood too and it’s amazing to see it drawn!

This dude is trying to draw all the buildings in New York. I think he’s just drawing Manhattan, though.

That made me miss Nassau Avenue.

Brilliant idea. I’d love to explore a drawn, virtual city.
